The Threat of Alligator Alcatraz
Opinion/Informative

When Nazi Germany had first introduced the idea of concentration camps, they were set up as detention centers for who they believed were “enemies of the state.” The mass detaining of the Jews on the basis of the Nazis’racial ideology intensified following Kristallnacht and continued until the end of WWII.
As of late June, Florida's Attorney General James Uthmeier proposed the idea of Alligator Alcatraz in support of the Trump’s Administration crackdown on “illegal” immigration. This project includes turning an airfield in the Everglades into a migrant detention center; the term “Alligator Alcatraz” would come from its proximity to the apex predators. The 30 square-mile area is completely surrounded by the Everglades, showcasing a low cost opportunity to build a temporary detention facility as there wouldn’t be much to be invested in the perimeter.
Even better, the 10,500 foot long runway was actually used for precision instrument landing and a training facility, but when asked about it Uteheimer claimed that it was “virtually abandoned.” Uteheimer also stated, “ If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons.”
But it's all in hopes of making the country safer, right? Taking away an airport that provides a precision-instrument landing and training facility in South Florida for commercial pilots, private training, and a small number of military touch-and-goes. At least they are going to use it for those “criminals” who are ruining the country.
A five year old? Being a criminal?
A five year old who was taught to be brave. A five year old who is now scared every single day.
“Is mom/dad going to get back home today?” No child should have to grow up being scared because they live in a society that finds them dirty, that finds them disgusting, that finds them to be a waste of space.
A literal child had to defend himself in court with no lawyers, no parents as they were already detained and were going to be deported and all because they don’t have the documents to state that they aren’t from here. If you are using tax documents to find immigrants, it’s not that they don’t pay taxes. ICE is going after people with or without records, the first 100 people who were detained “only” seven had died. This is ridiculous, they are not protecting the people, the administration is showing us the real reason is racism even going so far as to detain people who built this country.
But the worst thing is that they're not even caring about the people who are here as citizens because of as last night at 2:00 a.m, when everybody was sleeping, they have passed a bill that will take away broadcasting programs and will also take away emergency forecast systems. But you would think even after the Texas flooding, which was also caused by the administration's setbacks on forecast systems, they decided that they would still take away just even more this time .
So what makes you think they care about immigrants?
A report finds that staff and many detention facilities have examined detained individuals to dangerously standard medical care over crowding abusive treatment and restrictions on access to legal and psychological support. Officers have denied that these detainees have denied the detainees critical medication and detained some in solitary confinement as an apparent punishment for seeking mental health care. Facility officers returned some detainees to detention directly from hospital stays with no follow-up treatment. They detained others in solitary confinement or transferred them without notice, disrupting legal representation. They forced them to sleep on cold concrete floors without bedding and gave them food which was sometimes substandard, and in many instances ignored their medical requirements. Some officers treated detainees in dehumanizing ways.
As we can see due to this report, many people have been subjected to similar what we can now as concentration camps and we understood that the Holocaust was due to racism and what could also be considered Darwinism, so we as a society should not allow it to break apart what should be a better society, as we do not wish for history to repeat itself with such a dangerous time for many people no matter where they were.
Even if they are now targeting what seems to be most of the Hispanic population, everyone has the right for due process and they have the right to be treated with respect no matter where they are from or no matter who they are.
If our lawmakers truly do wish to make the USA more safer for citizens, they must return human rights to those who aren't citizens and even citizens in the country itself, as we've seen time and time again we must take action no matter who the fight truly is and as long as we fight for someone's rights we fight for everyone's.
