Far-right political activist Laura Loomer has once again erupted public outrage over another social media post.
Laura Loomer is known for her racist, sexist, homophobic and Islamophobic commentary. Positioning herself as a controversial individual in U.S politics. Beyond various failed congressional runs, and faced disapproval from representatives of her own political party, she relentlessly continues to amplify her presence in politics.
Gator Food
On June 30th, Laura Loomer posted on X (formerly Twitter), a comment suggesting an entire ethnicity in the U.S should be fed to vicious animals surrounding Alligator Alcatraz.
Alligator Alcatraz is an immigration detention center in Everglades, Florida, encompassed by alligators and pythons. Furthermore, it is guarded with 400 security personnel, 25,000 feet of barbed wire and 200 cameras. This center has become a clear demonstration of inhumanity and fear for undocumented immigrants; creating a serious situation America must face.
With 65.2 million Latinos living in the United States, dozens of social media users and influencers have contributed to the immense amount of backlash she has received from this post. Even former president Barack Obama's assistant, and co-host of Pod Save America (A political podcast), Tommy Vietor argued that she is a “lunatic” (Keane), and questioned her manners towards the Latino population. Despite the fact that a large sum of immigrants may be of Latino Origin, they do not make up the entire immigrant population. This post was not simply part of her anti-immigrant activism, but she intended to signify that every single Latino in the U.S, regardless of their gender, religion, age and most importantly, legal status, should be dead.
While Loomer may not disregard this genocidal comment, one would hope she enjoys her country when nearly 20% of the U.S workforce has been consumed as alligator food.
Past Presence
While Loomer’s presence began to grow since her time at Barry University, through anti-muslim activism, her figure broke out when she traveled with President Donald J. Trump for his presidential campaign in 2024. This experience alone did not boost her figure, but as to what she posted on X two days prior attending these events with President Trump. On September 8, 2024, Loomer responded to a post on X by Kamala Harris (the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee), which mentioned a memory she had as a young child when visiting her grandparents in India. As Kamala is half Indian, Loomer bashed her cultural heritage by making a racist comment claiming that “the White House will smell like curry” (Loomer), and be held at a call center if she were to win.
While she claims to be an extreme republican, even representatives of her own political party have condemned her comments. Most notably, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, claimed this post was “extremely racist” (Foran). Furthermore, Greene clarified that this comment “does not represent who we are as Republicans or MAGA” (Bensinger). Loomer rejected Greene’s opinion, claiming that Greene was merely envious of her connection to Mr. Trump. She later defended her comment by implying it was simply a sense of humor. Although considering Loomer’s close relation to Trump, was this the correct moment for such humor?
In a CNN interview, Manu Raju asked Greene if she would advise Donald Trump (the 2024 Republican Presidential Nominee) to keep a strong connection with Loomer, in which Greene asserted that she does not believe Loomer has enough qualifying experience or the right state of mind to advise such a crucial presidential election.
Moreover, Republican Senator from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham, reassured that Loomer was “really toxic” (Bensinger). In response, Loomer challenged the degree of loyalty Mr. Graham has for Mr. Trump.
Lastly, a Republican Senator from North Carolina, Thom Tillis reported that Loomer was a “crazy conspiracy theorist” (Bensinger), whose intention is to polarize the Republicans. In a similar fashion, Loomer went ahead to label him as a RINO, which essentially claims that he is disloyal to his party. However, this arrogant behavior does not come as a shock with such a mentor being Roger Stone. Her political activism has yet to serve successful campaigns. When running for congress in Florida’s 21st district during 2020, and once more in 2022, she officially lost both, Roger being her close mentor. Roger Stone and Laura Loomer both grew close to Trump. At one point, Trump even pardoned Roger of his seven felony counts (that he was found guilty of) in 2019.
Overall, Loomer has continued to demonstrate a perspective which carries racist and presumptuous ideas. (These concepts to dangerous extents and individuals/communities must be able to speak out against these impudent mindsets, for the future of a better America.) It is pivotal that the public may reject these wicked views, because choosing to remain silent in struggles like this, given historical context, is negligence and plain simple wrong.
